Fred

"Fred" Painting by Alton R. Lowe

Fred was fourteen when, legally a man, he joined his father in the crawfishing business as first mate on the “Stamba” followed shortly after on the “Mary Ann Kate”. The MAK was his home at sea for many years. The boat collected crawfish from other fishermen and made weekly trips to the United States where crawfish and other fish were sold.

In the painting you see Fred mending a net during a summertime break. The years of a hard life has changed him from a handsome, muscular young man to a tough but wise and kind older man. With a wife and two children plus the friendship and respect of the entire village of New Plymouth, Fred lived a good life and a long life. What more can a man hope for? - Alton
